Crocheted Drink Napkins

A week or so ago, I was cleaning house and discovered that my husband's coaster had gotten very gross and looked a little moldy. Granted it was a cloth covered foam that held moisture like a sponge! It was still really gross, and I knew I couldn't just pop it in the washer, but it gave me a great idea! I needed to make some drink napkins that we could use once and then wash. I don't like the idea of using paper napkins or towels as coasters. They look gross and don't really hold much moisture - not to mention all the waste produced when throwing them away.

My husband had 3D printed a plastic coaster (something from a video game he plays), but with any coaster that has hard surfaces the moisture either runs off or the sticky spills collect in the grooves - his was the second version. I don't know about you, but I don't like scrubbing sticky messes out of tight corners either.

My drink napkins are a little larger than the average coaster. They are five inches square, the same size as regular drink napkins. They are flexible and made of cotton for good absorbency, and - best of all - they are machine washable and dryable! And they look great in my living room! I actually tasked my husband with building a nice, wooden holder for them. He worked up a rough one, but hasn't gotten around to finishing one nicely. I'm thinking that once he does, they will make a nice set to sell on Etsy. For now, there's the pattern so you can make your own set. I think they would make great gifts for weddings, housewarming, or for Christmas. That's coming up sooner than we want to believe!

To make your own set of napkins, you will need a size G/6 (4.25 mm) crochet hook and a cake of Lion Brand Comfy Cotton yarn. One cake should make about 11 napkins. Each napkin is crocheted from corner to corner using the linen stitch. The work up pretty quick - again, great for gifts!

Crochet Pattern

This crochet drink napkin is the perfect, environmentally friendly way to protect the hard surfaces in your home. Crochet drink napkins are both absorbent and machine washable.

Notes
Each crochet napkin is worked from corner to corner using the linen stitch. Each cake of Lion Brand Comfy Cotton Blend makes approximately 11 napkins. This is an easy crochet pattern. The only stitches required are chain, single crochet, and single crochet two together.

Instructions are written using standard US abbreviations. 
Ch - chain
Sc - single crochet
Sc2tog - single crochet two together

Finished Size
Each napkin measures approximately 5" (12.7 cm) square

Materials
Lion Brand Comfy Cotton Blend (7 oz./200 g; 392 yds./ 358 m)
I used #098 Whipped Cream and #721 Cool Night
Size G/6 (4.25 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge

Gauge
Gauge is not important for this project, but if you want your napkins to measure 5” square, try to stay at the following gauge:
23 rows/23 stitches = 4 inches (10 cm) in linen stitch.

Instructions
First half of square - increasing at both ends of each row.
Row 1: Ch 2. Sc in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1 sc in same stitch. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc. Ch 1, sc in ch 1 sp. Ch 1, sc in last sc. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first sc. *Ch 1, sc in next ch 1 sp. Repeat from * to last ch 1 sp. Ch 1, sc in last sc. Turn.
Rows 4-20: Repeat Row 3. At the end of Row 20, each short edge of the triangle you have worked should measure approximately 5" (127 cm). You can make your napkin any size you like by crocheting more or fewer rows.

Second half of square - decreasing at both ends of each row.
Row 21: Ch 1, sc in first ch 1 sp. *Ch 1, sc in next ch 1 sp. Repeat from * to second ch 1 sp from end. Sc2tog in last ch 1 sp and last sc. Turn.
Rows 22-39: Repeat Row 21.
Row 40: Ch 1, sc2tog in ch 1 sp and last sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
