Comfy Casual Crocheted Cotton Cardigan

I'm so excited that I finished this Comfy Casual Crocheted Cotton Cardigan (Five Cs Cardigan, for short) - yes, I'm terrible at naming my projects! I've been working on it for several weeks now, in between all my other projects, but when I finally got within sight of the end, I had to just crank it out.

I designed this cardigan to be a more casual piece, something to wear all weekend when I'm just hanging out at home. I wanted it to be thick and warm without looking super chunky. Cotton yarn really did the trick! This cardigan is HEAVY compared to most acrylic or wool sweaters, but the weight feels great when you wear it, kind of like wearing a weighted blanket. It's warm, but not to warm. The cotton breathes to keep you just the right snuggly temperature.

I also added pockets because I am one of those people who never knows what to do with my hands. And it's nice to have a place for my phone since half of my jeans have pockets that are too small. I'm sure many of you know what I mean!

The shawl collar is a half double crochet rib - a stitch I fell in love with a couple years ago, and that love hasn't faded. It's one of the few crochet stitches that has the stretchiness of knitted stitches without being too open or lacy.

This is a pretty basic pattern. The trickiest part is the shaping of the sleeves. Because each piece, including the sleeves, is worked side to side rather than bottom to top, or top to bottom, the sleeve shaping involves working short rows rather than increases. I have included a photo tutorial to help with this part. The rest is made of simple rectangles, so it should be easy enough for most beginning crocheters to handle.

The full pattern is available below, but if you would prefer an ad-free, printable pdf, visit my Etsy listing. You can add this pattern to your Ravelry queue here.

Photo Tutorial

To begin you will need 6-10 balls of Lion Brand Comfy Cotton Blend. I used the color Cool Night, but this yarn comes in so many gorgeous colors that would look great! The back is worked from one side to the other. You start by making a chain. Then work the sedge stitch pattern (sc, hdc, dc in same stitch then skip two stitches), ending with a single crochet in the 11th chain from the end.

The last 10 stitches, are worked in half double crochet ribbing.

When you turn, you will work the first 10 stitches with a half double crochet in the front loop only.

Then continue by working a sc, hdc, dc in the first single crochet.

Repeat this pattern for the entire back panel. The front panels are worked in the same fashion, just fewer rows.

The sleeves are where it gets a little trickier. To work the sleeves, you start the same as for the front and back - chain the required number of stitches, then work the sedge stitch pattern to the last 10 chains, which are worked in hdc. Like the front and back panels, the second row is worked in reverse, hdc in the front loop only for those first 10 stitches, then sedge stitch for the rest of the row. To get the taper on the sleeve, the third and fourth rows are only worked part of the way down before turning and working back to the top of the sleeve.

Begin by working the first two rows. Then work in sedge stitch for the required number of stitches.

Slip stitch into the next single crochet.

Then turn your work and slip stitch into the double crochet and half double crochet of the previous sedge stitch.

Continue working in the sedge stitch pattern by working a sc, hdc, and dc in the next single crochet.

Continue in pattern to end of row and turn. The next row will be worked all the way through the hdc ribbing. When you get to the place where you turned, work a sedge stitch into the last single crochet before the slip stitches.

Work the next sedge stitch into to single crochet you slip stitched into before your short row turn.

Then continue working in sedge stitch until you reach the last 10 stitches. Work only a single crochet in the last sc of the row, then work 10 hdc in the front loop only of the 10 half double crochets that form the bottom ribbing.

Keep careful count of your rows because once you work the two full rows, the short rows are very difficult to find.

This pattern repeats with each pair of short rows getting shorter toward the middle of the sleeve, then getting longer again as you reach the opposite side of the sleeve. This gives the top of the sleeve a little curve across the top where it meets the body of the cardigan.

To assemble your cardigan, just sew the front panels to the back at the shoulder seams. I used a slip stitch seam, but a sewn seam would work just as well, with a little less bulk. Then attach the sleeves. To get an even seam, match the row pairs (the sedge stitch creates little squares so the pairs of rows are easier to count than individual rows) with the sedge stitch groupings along the side of the body. By counting squares and lining up the center of the sleeve with the shoulder seam, you can avoid having the sleeve bunch while you are sewing. This will give you the smoothest seam so your sleeve blends well with the body of the cardigan.

Once you have the sleeves attached, with the cardigan inside out, sew the side seams and sleeve seams in one long seam. I started at the sleeve end, but if you match up stitch groupings, you should get a nice even seam no matter which way you sew. I used a slip stitch for all of my seams, but as for the shoulder seams, a sewn seam will leave a little less bulk in your seams.

Let me know if you have any questions! On with the pattern!

Comfy Casual Crocheted Cotton Cardigan

Crochet Pattern

This cotton cardigan is so comfy and casual, the perfect addition to your fall wardrobe. Great for a stay at home weekend, or to stay warm on those cool fall mornings. It is warm, but not too warm, because it is made from a cotton blend yarn. The cotton yarn gives this cardigan a weight to it, allowing it to hang nicely and wrap you in cozy comfort all day.

The Five Cs Cardigan is crocheted in the sedge stitch, which is a sc, hdc, and dc worked in the same stitch, with two stitches skipped in between each group. The stitch pattern gives it a unique texture, a little like a thermal or waffle type stitch. The weight of the yarn and the rich texture make this a great cardigan for a walk through the woods on a cool fall day.

Assembly
Shoulder Seams
Sew shoulder seams by matching outside edge of front piece with outside edge of back piece. Match rows with right sides together. Seam using slip stitch crochet or tapestry needle and whip stitch.

Attach sleeves
Line up center of sleeve top with shoulder seam. Count rows to line up entire sleeve seam and stitch using sl st or with tapestry needle and whip stitch.

Sew side seams
Line up armhole seams and edges of garment with right sides together. Sew side/sleeve seams beginning at sleeve cuff and ending at bottom edge of garment.

Collar
Attach yarn at bottom corner of front right piece (as worn). Collar will be worked back and forth starting on the right side of the piece, up the right front, across the back neck, and down the left front.
Row 1: Hdc in each stitch up right front opening of cardigan. Then work hdc evenly spaced in ends of rows, approximately 3 hdc for each 2 rows, across back neck. Continue by working one hdc in each stitch down left front opening. Turn.
