Knit Drink Napkins
Here it is - the knit version of my drink napkins! These drink napkins are a great alternative to hard coasters or paper napkins. They can be washed and dried in a machine for easy clean up. They also look great!
The knit version uses the woven knit stitch. It gives them a nice woven look that actually reminds me of those woven loom potholders I used to make as a kid. Anyone remember those? You had these loops of fabric like rubber bands that you would weave through and attach to the pegs on the outside.
The woven stitch can be a little tricky. You knit the stitches in pairs, knitting (or purling) the second stitch first, then knit (or purl) the first stitch before dropping both stitches from the left needle. Once you get the hang of this stitch it works up pretty quickly though.
Unlike the crochet version, the knit version has a different texture on each side, both of which are very attractive! Because of this they also have a tendency to curl, just a tad. Blocking helps.
I hope you enjoy this pattern! If you would like to check out the crochet version, you can find it here. Look for some embellishments in an upcoming post. I'm really having fun with these!

Knitting Pattern
Drink napkins are a quick and easy project to complete. They are made with Lion Brand Comfy Cotton Blend, and you can make 10-12 napkins from a single cake of yarn. The only stitch used is the woven stitch. To work this stitch you are basically crossing stitches in pairs, working the second stitch on the left-hand needle first, then working the first stitch before dropping both stitches from the needle.
Finished Size
The finished napkins are approximately 5" (13 cm) square. Size can easily be varied by casting on more stitches (an odd number is required) and knitting more rows.
Materials
Lion Brand Comfy Cotton Blend (7 oz./200 g; 392 yds./358 m) (this yarn is now discontinued)
Colors shown are #720 Lovie Dovie and #098 Whipped Cream
Size 7 straight needles (or size need to obtain gauge)
Gauge
Approximately 32 stitches and 25 rows = 4" (10 cm)
Instructions (and video tutorials)
Cast on 39 stitches.
This video shows how to do a knit on cast on.
Row 1 (RS): Wyib, sl 1st st purlwise. Insert right-hand needle through the back of 2nd stitch on left-hand needle. Knit this stitch but do not drop stitch off left needle. Insert right-hand needle into 1st st on left needle and knit. Drop both stitches off left needle. Repeat for each pair of stitches across row. Turn.
Sometimes it is easier to do something with a demonstration. This video shows how to work Row 1 and all right side rows.
Row 2 (WS): Wyif, sl 1st st purlwise. Purl 2nd st on left needle. Do not drop stitch from needle. Purl 1st st on left needle and drop both worked stitches from left needle. Repeat for each pair of stitches across row. Turn.
This video shows how to work Row 2 and all wrong side rows.
Repeat Row 1 and Row 2 until piece measures almost 5" (13 cm), ending with Row 2. This should be approximately 30 rows. Remember that the bind off row will add about 1/8 - 1/4" to napkin. Bind off in pattern. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
