Oatmeal and Raisin Beanie

 This beanie pattern is designed for the new knitter who would like to learn to knit brioche in the round. It is a quick project that is super easy and only requires a small amount of yarn. I have also included a detailed photo tutorial for knitting brioche in the round. So if you are new to knitting and have always wanted to try brioche knitting, you are in the right spot! And if you like hats with pom poms, this beanie would look great with one!

To make this beanie you will need two colors of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick yarn. You will also need a 24" circular knitting needle, a stitch marker, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends. The links below are the products I used to knit this scarf.

Photo Tutorial - Brioche Knit in the Round (Hat)

Round 1: 1x1 Ribbing and Join to Work in Round

1. Using the Half Hitch Cast On (see instructions in the Oatmeal and Raisin Scarf Photo Tutorial), CO enough stitches for the size you are making.

2. Begin k1 p1 across by knitting the first stitch. Purl the second stitch. Pull each stitch a little, but not tight. Make sure you have uniform loops across the bottom. 

3. By the end of the row, the extra yarn in the middle will be a bit longer. You will pull it through on the last stitch, which will make the tail a bit longer. 

4. Spread stitches around the needle, making sure they are not twisted around the needles.

5. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round. 

6. Continue working k1 p1 around, starting with k1 in the first stitch of the round.

Round 7: Contrasting Color

      

1. When you have worked 6 rounds in 1x1 ribbing, attach contrasting color (Color B) on the back of your work. 

2. Bring yarn to front, insert needle into next stitch as if to purl.

3. Wrap yarn around needle as if to purl, but do not complete the stitch.

4. Slip stitch to RH needle without completing the stitch (one slip stitch pw, yo completed)

5. Purl the next stitch

6. Continue around in this pattern. At the end of the round, change to your main color.

Round 8: Main Color

1. Holding yarn in back, knit the first stitch with its yarn over (brk).

2. Bring yarn to front and slip the next stitch purlwise.

3. Knit the next stitch with its yarn over (brk), bringing yarn over RH needle to complete the stitch.

4. You will have two knit stitches and one slipped stitch with a yarn over.

5. When you reach the end of the round, the last stitch will be a slipped stitch, yarn over.

6. Change to your contrasting color by bringing the main color yarn over on top of the contrasting color. 

7. Then bring the contrasting color to the front, anchoring the yarn over in place.

8. Repeat Round 7. The first stitch will be a slipped stitch with yarn over.

9. Brioche purl (brp) the next stitch - purl the next stitch with its yarn over.

Repeat Rounds 7 and 8 to work brioche in the round. You will always work brioche knit in your main color and brioche purl in your contrasting color.

The hat pattern is written in 3 sizes: S, M, and L. This pattern can be adjusted for a perfect fit.

Hat Circumference (at band, unstretched): 16 (18, 20)”/41 (46, 51) cm

Hat Length: 10”/25 cm

Instructions are written using standard US abbreviations. 

CO - cast on

K - knit

P - purl

Brk - brioche knit

Brp - brioche purl

Yo - yarn over

Wyif - with yarn in front

BO - bind off

RS - right side of work

WS - wrong side of work

MC - main color

CC - contrasting color

Materials

• Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick™ solids (6 oz./170 g; 106 yds/97 m): 
• 1 skein #123 Oatmeal (Main Color)
• 1 skein #144 Raisin (Contrasting Color)
• Size 11 (8.00 mm), 24” circular knitting needles 
• Stitch markers
• Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)

Gauge (Approximately)

With Wool Ease Thick & Quick™ and size 11 (8.00 mm) needles:

16 stitches in 1x1 rib = 4” (10 cm) - completely unstretched

12 rows in 1x1 rib = 4” (10 cm)

Instructions

With size 11 (8.00 mm), 16” - 24” circular needles and MC, CO 32 (34, 36) stitches. 

Note: If you use a half-hitch cast on, work the first round flat before joining to work in round. With other cast on methods, join to work in round first. 

Round 1 (see note above): K1 p1 around. Join to work in round, placing marker for BOR.

Rounds 2-6: Repeat Round 1 until piece measures 1” (2.5 cm) or desired length.

Begin brioche pattern

Round 7 (CC): Attach CC. Sl marker *Wyif, insert needle into next stitch as if to purl, wrap yarn around needle, but do NOT complete the stitch. Slip stitch and yo to right-hand needle. Purl next stitch with its yo. Repeat from * around. 

Round 8 (MC): Sl marker. k next stitch, bringing yarn over needle to complete the stitch; bring yarn to front; sl next stitch pw wyif.

Repeat Rounds 7-8 alternating colors until hat measures approximately 9”, ending with a Round 7. If you prefer a longer hat with more slouch, knit more rounds. If you would like your hat to fit more snugly, work until it measures about 8”. Fasten off CC.

Crown Shaping

Follow directions for the size you are making ONLY.

Crown Shaping (size S only)

With MC

Round 1: K1 brp1 around. Brp means to purl both the stitch and its yarn over together. (32 stitches)

Round 2: *K1, k2tog, p1. Repeat from * BOR.  (24 stitches)

Round 3: *K2 p1, repeat from * to BOR.  (24 stitches)

Round 4: *K2tog p1, repeat from * to BOR. (16 stitches)

Round 5: K2tog around. (8 stitches) 

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail on tapestry needle and pull though each loop remaining on needles. Pull snug and fasten off tightly. Weave in ends.

Crown Shaping (size M only)

With MC

Round 1: K1 p1 around. (34 stitches)

Round 2: *K1, k2tog, p1. Repeat from * to last 2 stitches; k1, remover marker from between last stitch and first stitch of next round, k2tog, replace marker.  (25 stitches)

Round 3: K1, *p1 k2, repeat from * to BOR. (25 stitches)

Round 4: K1, *p1 k2tog. Repeat from * to BOR. (17 stitches)

Round 5: K1, *k2tog; repeat from * around. (9 stitches) 

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail on tapestry needle and pull though each loop remaining on needles. Pull snug and fasten off tightly. Weave in ends.

Crown Shaping (size L only)

With MC

Round 1: K1 p1 around. (36 stitches)

Round 2: *K1, k2tog, p1. Repeat from * to BOR.  (27 stitches)

Round 3: *K2 p1, repeat from * to BOR. (27 stitches)

Round 4: *K2tog p1, repeat from * to BOR. (18 stitches)

Round 5: K2tog around. (9 stitches) 

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail on tapestry needle and pull though each loop remaining on needles. Pull snug and fasten off tightly. Weave in ends.
