Star Stitch Tutorial

The Star Stitch is a great crochet stitch that creates an interesting pattern. It's a fun stitch to work, and it has an elegant look even with bulky yarn.

Star Stitch Tutorial

To crochet the star stitch you will be pulling up five loops to your hook and then drawing a loop through all six of the loops (the five you pulled up plus the first loop). The second row (to complete the star stitch) is just half double crochet in the top of each star stitch. Follow these steps for the first row of star stitch:

For the first star stitch in a series

Step 1: sc, ch 1 (this provides a starting point for the first star stitch)

Step 2: Insert hook into the back loop of the ch-1 just made. Pull up a loop.

Step 3: Insert hook into the left leg of the sc. Pull up a loop.

Step 4: Insert hook into same stitch as sc. Pull up a loop.

Step 5: Insert hook into blo of next stitch, pull up a loop. Repeat once more in next stitch.

Step 6: You now have 6 loops on your hook. Yo, pull yarn through all 6 loops. Ch 1. First star stitch created.

Remaining star stitches

The steps for each star stitch after the first are basically the same. The difference is you will be inserting your hook into the left leg of the last star stitch, not the single crochet.

Step 1: Insert hook into loop made at top of last star stitch by the ch-1. Pull up a loop.

Step 2: Insert hook into left leg of previous star stitch. Pull up a loop.

Step 3: Insert hook into same space as last loop of previous star stitch. Pull up a loop.

Step 4: Insert hook into blo of next stitch, pull up a loop. Repeat once more in following stitch.

Step 5: You now have 6 loops on your hook. YO, pull yarn through all 6 loops. Ch 1. Second star stitch created. Repeat steps 1 through 5 for each remaining star stitch.

Below two videos to see these steps in action. The first shows the star stitch as described above, and the second shows how to complete the stitch with the half double crochet row.
