Furry (Almost) Super Scarf

The weather is getting colder here in Minnesota. I heard recently that next week is supposed to feel like January! I'm glad I have this super warm and cozy scarf to wear.

I started the knit version of this scarf first. It was designed to be a "super" scarf. Unfortunately I ran out of yarn right near the end, plus it turned out to be not as long as I'd hoped. I had to order more yarn, so in the meantime, I unraveled it, and created the crochet version. This one isn't quite as wide as the knit version (although you could easily repeat the pattern and double the width if you have more than one skein of each color). I looked up the definition of "super scarf," and it turns out this one isn't quite there. But it's big enough to keep my warm and cozy and it sure looks "super!"

This is a super easy pattern. The only stitches required are chain and slip stitch. If you have made my Tribal Stripes Bath Mat or my Painted Stripes Cowl, you have all the crochet skills you need! I wouldn't recommend it as a first crochet project because it is difficult to see the stitches in the fur, but a confident beginner will have a breeze with this scarf. The trick is to crochet by feel. Use your left hand to feel for the stitch where you are going to insert your hook.

The other challenge with this yarn is keeping it from twisting. With each stitch, make sure the fur side is facing out and the strip the fur is attached to is facing your hook. With a little practice you'll have the wrist movement down pat to wrap the yarn with the fur facing out.

Furry (Almost) Super Scarf

Crochet Pattern

Winter is coming! The Furry (Almost) Super Scarf is a super fuzzy faux fur scarf that is big, but not quite big enough to qualify as “super.” This scarf will keep you cozy and warm, while also stylish. It is a simple crochet project that only requires chain and slip stitch. The faux fur also hides some of those mistakes and uneven stitches!

Difficulty

Materials

Lion Brand Go For Faux (3.5 oz/100 g; 65 yds/60 m): 1 skein of each of the following colors:
  • Baked Alaska (#098) - color A
  • Pomeranian (#203) - color B
  • Chinchilla (#204) - color C
  • Mink (#200) - color D
Size Q/17 (15.75 mm) crochet hook

Gauge
Gauge is unimportant for this item, but to get the same size as described:
8 rows = 4” (10 cm)
6 stitches = 4” (10 cm)

Finished Size
Finished scarf measures approximately 8” (20 cm) wide and 78” (198 cm) long. There is a bit of stretch lengthwise, so it is longer and narrower when worn.

Instructions are written using standard US abbreviations.
Ch - chain
Sl st - slip stitch

Notes
Scarf is worked from the long side to achieve lengthwise stripes. Colors are changed every two rows (except for larger center stripe). When changing color, leave tails hanging to weave in later. Carrying colors up the side will not look nice on the finished scarf.

Instructions
With color A (Baked Alaska), chain 120.
Row 1 (A): Sl stitch into the back hump of each chain across. Change to color B. Turn.
Row 2 (B): Sl stitch in the topmost loop of each stitch across. Turn.
Row 3: (B): Repeat Row 2. Change to color C.
Rows 4-5: (C): Repeat Row 2. Change to color D at end of Row 5.
Rows 6-9 (D): Repeat Row 2. Change to color C at end of Row 9.
Rows 10-11 (C): Repeat Row 2. Change to color B at end of Row 11.
Rows 12-13 (B): Repeat Row 2. Change to color A at end of Row 13.
Rows 14-15 (A): Repeat Row 2. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
